Course Information
Description Study of the history, theories, philosophies, rules, and terminology of competitive sports. Includes coaching techniques.
Prerequisites None. (Recommended KINE 1301)
Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

1.    Demonstrate an understanding of the history, theories, philosophies, rules, and terminology of competitive sports and coaching (PSLO 1,2, 5, Alpha) Measured by discussion board assignments, course activities, embedded quiz and test questions, and pre-test/post-test.
2.    Analyze the practice of leadership activities used by coaches and educators. (PSLO 1, 2, 5, Alpha) Measured by discussion board assignments, course activities, embedded quiz and test questions.
3.    Demonstrate the ability to understand and apply a variety of essential components that promote effective leadership in coaching and athletics. (PSLO 1,2,3, 5, Alpha) Measured by discussion board assignments, course activities, embedded quiz and test questions.
Core Objectives PSLO ALPHA: Reading skills - Demonstrates comprehension of content-area reading material.
Identifies all main ideas, supporting details, and vocabulary in reading material; demonstrates a full understanding of the reading.
PSLO 1: Critical Thinking Skills – Uses creative thinking, innovation, inquiry and analysis, evaluation, and synthesis of information.
Creatively identifies problem, argument, or issue (to determine extent of information needed); differentiates the facts from opinions as relates to situation; constructs possible solutions or prediction or consequences; uses logical, sound reasoning to justify conclusion.
PSLO 2: Communication Skills – Demonstrates effective development, interpretation, and expression of ideas through written, oral and/or visual communication.
Expresses a strong thesis; organizes information with effective transitions & sequencing of ideas; uses substantial, logical & specific development of ideas; details are relevant, original, credible and correctly documented when appropriate to show an effective development and interpretation of ideas; and presents ideas in appropriate mode of expression for the task.
PSLO3: Empirical and Quantitative Skills – Applies the manipulation and/or analysis of numerical data or observable facts resulting in informed conclusions.
Identifies mathematical or scientific principles needed to complete task; uses mathematical or scientific principles needed to complete task; analyzes how to use the principles; and applies problem-solving skills in mathematical or scientific principles needed to complete task with correct informed conclusions.
PSLO 5: Social Responsibility Skills - Expresses intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities.
Identifies cultural characteristics (including beliefs, values, perspectives and/or practices); demonstrates knowledge of civic responsibility; provides evidence of experience in civic- engagement activities; and describes what she/ he has learned as it relates to a reinforced and clarified sense of civic identity in local, regional, national, or global communities; and shows awareness of one’s own culture in relation to others.

Determination of
Final Grade
A point value will be given to each assignment throughout the semester. A student’s final grade will be determined by using their total points earned divided by the total points possible, and the percentage will be used with a standard grading scale. The Additional Course Information Handout will provide detailed information on assignments and point totals.
Course Policies
Instructor Policies Make-up Assignments: Students must contact the instructor to request a make-up assignment prior to the deadline. This will only be accepted in rare circumstances and only partial credit will be given.
Attendance Policy Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. This is an online class, so it is a requirement to regularly check student e-mail and the Blackboard system. Students are required to be present in the online class and must login and stay current on all assignments. Students must notify the course instructor of any long-term absences and plan with the instructor to complete all course assignments in a timely fashion. Any student that is not present in the online class for the time frame of one week, or students that are two weeks delinquent in assignments may be dropped from the course for non-attendance.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.

Other Online Participation: There will be a regular discussion board requirement for this course. Students will be required to participate in discussions and online activities. Students should adhere to course guidelines and adhere to the Discussion Board Do’s and Don’ts as well as the Netiquette handouts.

Posting of Grades: Grades will be posted in the Online Grade book associated with Blackboard system. The instructor will not send grades via e-mail or give the information out orally over the telephone. The instructor will strive to grade assignments and post feedback in a timely manner.
